Atelier 10 stands out as a unique project in the art world. Housed in a former baking factory, this shared studio space and gallery primarily supports artists with health-related or cognitive disabilities. While their work has often been categorized under labels like Art Brut or Outsider Art, Atelier 10 strives to move beyond these classifications, embracing a more inclusive approach to artistic expression.
To celebrate a decade of creative endeavors, Johannes Lang and I were tasked with designing a book that would showcase Atelier 10’s artistic output and activities without conforming to conventional art book publishing. Our solution was to create a randomized Werkschau for the first part of the book, allowing images to intermingle in a generated layout. This approach mirrors the studio's collaborative atmosphere, where artists work side by side as individuals within a community. The book's second half features a comprehensive bilingual index, organizing materials both chronologically and alphabetically.
Each section of the book possesses a distinct tactile and visual quality, contributing to the overall design. To facilitate easy cross-referencing, large figures in the margin indicate image numbering, while index letters provide orientation in the alphabetical section. This innovative concept not only captures the essence of Atelier 10, but also ensures the book is intuitive to navigate and visually engaging.
